Everyone’s great battle

“Be gentle with each person you meet, for each of them is fighting a great battle.”

(St. Ephrem the Syrian)

P.S. Anyone know what the above quote is from? I came across the quote while browsing the blogosphere–it was on the “masthead” of someone’s blog, but I can’t remember whose. I collected the quote and moved on, but now I can’t remember where I saw it…

It is attributed to St Philo of Alexander, although no one can provide a citation. It may be in the same class as “Preach always, use words only when necessary”, which is always attributed to St Francis yet is not linked to anything he ever wrote or said.

I think you may have seen it on the masthead of my blog [I just recently linked to your blog]. not sure where it is from, as I think I found it the same way you did. I think I read it at Mark Shea’s blog – maybe try inquiring over there ? gotta run to work,

    Peace, Kevin
