Thanks, Clare. Believe it or not, I read virtually every one of these articles doing research for my book. There is a lot of good information out there, and a lot of wasted letters.

Your observation about technology and magic reminded me of the 3rd of Arthur C. Clarke’s Three Laws…

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

…and a similar law attributed to Larry Niven:

“any sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.”

Wow! That’s far more effort than I would want to exert on Harry Potter. I asked my kids not to read it but did not ban the books. I read Chamber of Secrets and found it OK. I was most bothered by the “magic solves the consequences of my misbehavior” themes I found in the book. These remind me of the “technology can help me cover up stuff” themes of real life.

In all, it’s more interesting than many books but not very substantial.
